There are two basic types of workers’ compensation injuries involving physical injury: an industrial accident and an occupational disease. An occupational disease is explained elsewhere in this Glossary. An accident, according to state law, means an unforeseen event occurring without the will or design of the person whose action causes it. An accident is an unexpected, unusual or undesigned occurrence. Examples of an accident are a slip and fall on a slippery floor, a cut, an exposure to a toxic material on a one-time basis, being struck by a falling object, or straining the back while lifting a heavy object.
