Prior to April 1, 1997, employers and their insurers had access to a special fund to help them pay for certain permanent total disability awards.  The Subsequent Injury Fund shared liability for permanent total disability benefits if two or more industrial injuries combined to render a claimant permanently and totally disabled.  The Subsequent Injury Fund was closed for good on April 1, 1997.  (Sections 8-46-101 to 109, C.R.S.).
